Wellstone International High School serves students ages 14 to 21 who have limited to no English language skills and have limited literacy skills in their first language. Wellstone also serves students eligible for English Learner (EL) services who need extra support to remain on track for graduation. Individualized learning opportunities within the classroom and intentional social service supports provide students with the opportunity to be academically successful.
Along with English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, Wellstone also accelerated English language development within high school content classes such as science, math and social studies. Content classes are taught in English and much of the instruction integrates content and native language teaching. Wellstone also offers elective courses of health, physical education and art. Literacy classes such as beginning, intermediate and advanced reading are offered to support English acquisition toward college and career readiness.
Many of the staff members at Wellstone are fluent in more than one language and several speak one fo the languages of the students they serve. A counselor, social worker and associate educators fluent in Spanish, Oromo, Amharic and Somali complement the staff. All languages are welcome.
