All MPS high schools offer support for students learning English as a second language. Depending on a student’s level of English language proficiency, he or she may be recommended to a high school that offers English Learner (EL) support for beginners at WIDA Levels 1 and 2. While beginning EL support is only offered at certain high schools, all district high schools offer intermediate and advanced EL support. Minneapolis Public Schools will determine if a student should be recommended to a high school for beginning level EL support based on results from the WIDA Assessment Placement Test (W-APT).
If a student is recommended for beginning level EL support (WIDA Level 1 or 2), he or she will be assigned to a high school with classes in English as a Second Language and sheltered content classes . If a student is recommended for intermediate level or higher (WIDA Levels 3, 4 and 5) EL support, he or she can follow the guidelines for requesting any high school.
